The Islanders are in Detroit for a one-off trip before coming back to New York for a back-to-back. With a rare off day during a semi-breather in their schedule, there was no practice on Monday, but today’s morning skate revealed one lineup concern: Mat Barzal is a game-time decision. The Red Wings (18-12-3, 39) are […]

Mike and Dan recap the Islanders’ week of winning shootouts (!) and the big trades that went down in the NHL before the weekend. When was the last time the Islanders won two shootouts in the same week? With the same guy scoring both game-winners? Feels like never. We talk about the wins (and blown […]
Well, at least the Tampa Bay Lightning finally scored more than one goal against Ilya Sorokin. After giving up two early goals, the Bolts battled back with goals from Darren Raddysh (on the power play) and J.J. Moser to tie the New York Islanders. Overtime solved nothing, and Sorokin stopped two of the Lightning’s three shootout attempts while Mathew Barzal and Emil Heineman were able to slip pucks past Jonas Johansson to earn the extra points in a 3-2 victory.
With the win the Islanders ...
The Islanders found themselves momentarily in first place in the Eastern Conference by total points (if not pts. percentage) on Dec. 13, 2025, after sweeping the Tampa Bay Lightning with the third win over the previous first-holders in the past couple of weeks. Like the previous two games with the Lightning, it was close, nerve-wracking […]

The Islanders franchise finally gives Pat LaFontaine his due this afternoon (3:3o start) with induction into their Hall of Fame if not a number retirement — never mind your Sims, Ladds and Berubes who’ve worn #16 since — and they face the Lightning for the third time in two weeks. But across the NHL, league […]
The New York Islanders were thrilled in the summer of 2024 when they won the right to land undrafted Russian scorer Maxim Tsyplakov. The physical forward made a solid transition to the NHL, recording 10 goals and 25 assists for 35 points in 77 games last season with 140 hits during his rookie campaign. He was re-signed to a two-year, $4.5 million deal to avoid arbitration this past offseason. But now, he's landed in coach Patrick Roy's doghouse due to his struggles in his sopho...
We welcome back our friend Joe Buono of IslesFix to rediscover Mathieu Schneider, an excellent defenseman who made a big impact on the Islanders in a surprisingly short period of time. The “other” piece of the disastrous Kirk Muller trade, Schneider was a born-and-bred New Yorker and the rare player who actually looked forward to […]
The Islanders kept rolling and kept pace in the East with a 5-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks, buoyed by a 3-0 first period including two Anders Lee power play goals that sent him ahead of Brock Nelson in the all-time franchise rankings. The win was tempered by the sight of Bo Horvat going down, […]
They’re not your father’s Ducks! Or at least not your older brother’s Ducks, or something. Tonight the Islanders host a Fairly Strong Ducks of Anaheim team that is first in its division at a very respectable 19-10-1. After years of “very tough negotiator” Pat Verbeek at the helm, it seems he just needed to hire […]
The Florida Panthers (14-12-2) will make its second-ever trip to the Beehive State to face the Utah Mammoth (14-14-3) at Delta Center tonight to open a four-game road trip that carries a high degree of difficulty.
Florida won in two different fashions over the weekend to finish off a rough six-game homestand (2-3-1) on a positive note. After beating the Columbus Blue Jackets 7-6 in overtime on Saturday, the Cats got back to basics to defeat the New York Islanders 4-1 on Sunday. Uvis Balin...
The Islanders overcame a 2-0 deficit, killed off a 4-on-3 penalty in overtime, and bounced back from a few setbacks to earn two points in a 5-4 shootout win over the Vegas Golden Knights. For a run of schedule that we thought might be disastrous, the Isles took two points from the Avalanche, Lightning (twice) […]
On December 8th in 1987, Philadelphia Flyers netminder Ron Hextall fired a puck the length of the ice into an empty Boston Bruins net becoming the first goalie to score a goal in a NHL game.
Though New York Islanders backstop Billy Smith had been credited with a goal eight years earlier, it was Colorado Rockies defenceman Rob Ramage who in fact last touched the puck. Thus, Hextall was the

The Tampa Bay Lightning will have to carry on without their starting goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy. The team announced on Monday, Vasilevskiy has been placed on the injured reserve, , and at this time, his injury is a complete mystery. The Russian netminder last played on Dec.2 against the New York Islanders when he allowed two goals. He's since been ruled day-to-day and then missed games against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Islanders on Saturday, and will miss his third in a row against ...
Mike and Dan enjoy being proven wrong by the Islanders, who won three of their tough games this week before losing to the Panthers on Sunday afternoon. Last week, things were not looking good. The Islanders had squandered much of their homestand on losses and had a run of games against recent Stanley Cup champions […]
The Florida Panthers concluded a rough six-game homestand on a high note, delivering a complete effort to beat the New York Islanders 4-1 at Amerant Bank Arena.
Florida opened the scoring at the 12:14 mark. After A.J. Greer lost the handle behind the net, Mackie Samoskevich took firm possession and sent a bounce pass off the boards back to Uvis Balinksis. The Latvian defenseman notched his first of the season when his wrist shot from the left point eluded David Rittich, who was screened b...
The Islanders couldn’t complete the Florida sweep, though all things considered they can come away marginally pleased to have exited the back-to-back with a couple points. They finished it with a 4-1 loss to the Panthers that they described as “out of sync,” while a positive-looking Patrick Roy said they can take away some learning […]
The Florida Panthers (13-12-2) will conclude a disappointing six-game homestand when they host the rising New York Islanders (16-10-3) late this afternoon at Amerant Bank Arena.
Sam Bennett (1G/3A), Brad Marchand (1G/3A) and Carter Verhaeghe (2G/1A) combined for eleven points in Florida’s wild 7-6 overtime victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets that saw Bennett take a pass from Marchand and beat Elvis Merzlikins with four seconds to go in the extra session. Seth Jones had a goal and an as...
It wasn’t pretty (other than Ilya Sorokin’s saves and Calum Ritchie’s cheeky finish), but the Isles pulled it off again to collect two regulation points and stun the Lightning in Tampa. For the second time in a week, Ilya Sorokin had the Tampa Bay Lightning’s number. After he stopped 27-of-28 shots in the Lightning’s 2-1 loss on December 3, he was even better on Saturday night, denying all 32 shots they threw at him in a 2-0 win. Calum Ritchie broke the scoreless tie in the third period and Casey Cizikas sealed the win with an empty-net goal. Jonas Johansson, making his second start in a row, stopped 17-of-18 shots.
Johansson started in place of Andrei Vasilevskiy, who m...
