Today In NHL History - Wideman's Shootout Miss

On February 2nd in 2006, St. Louis Blues defenseman Dennis Wideman famously flubbed a shootout attempt against Chicago Blackhawks rookie goalie Corey Crawford, awkwardly falling before managing a shot on net. The shootout miss remains a favorite among NHL hockey bloopers. The Blues eventually beat the Blackhawks that night by a score of 6-5. That's today in NHL history.

Blue Jackets & Blackhawks Becoming Trade Partners?

The Columbus Blue Jackets hit the Olympic break playing their best hockey of the season, and that heater has flipped their trade deadline story from “sell what you can” to “how far can this go?”  The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline reported that general manager Don Waddell wants to help the room, but the next few weeks will decide whether this is a real playoff push or just a hot stretch that forces a hard pivot. Blue Jackets trade deadline: buy now or protect assets Portzline’s read is th...

What do the numbers say about the Hawks’ ‘shutdown’ D pairing of Vlasic and Crevier?

There’s been plenty of talk this Blackhawks season — especially on some of the home broadcasts — regarding the shutdown defensive pairing of Alex Vlasic and Louis Crevier, who’ve been tasked with some of the most difficult assignments among Chicago blue-liners this season. The “shutdown” label describes their task, but are they truly shutting down their opponents? Let’s see what the numbers can tell us, using Natural Stat Trick’s always excellent data. Vlasic, who’s 24 and was a 2019...

5 Trade Candidates Listed From Chicago Blackhawks

The first month+ of the NHL season saw the Chicago Blackhawks get off to an unexpectedly strong start, going 10-5-4 and sitting in a playoff spot. But things came crashing down to earth, and the Hawks' rebuild will have to wait another year to advance to the next level. The team currently sits with a 22-26-9 record, and thoughts of a playoff spot are a distant memory. They will be sellers at the trade deadline after the Olympic Break is done. Scott Powers ,  Mark Lazerus  ...

Ain’t you hungry for success, success, success, success?

(Editor’s note: Plenty coming your way over the next few weeks without Blackhawks hockey, including game threads for the Olympics. Stay tuned!) Defining success for the Blackhawks was always going to be a challenging proposition this season due to the difficulty in finding objective benchmarks for it. A surge in the standings could be attributed to puck luck or supreme goaltending that wasn’t indicative of sustainable success. A return to the league’s basement could also be tolerated if a...

Head Like a Hole: Blackhawks at Blue Jackets Preview

For the second time in six days, the Blackhawks and Blue Jackets will meet on the ice, with the scene shifting to Columbus for Wednesday’s tilt in what’ll be the final game ahead of the Olympic break for both teams. Much of what was discussed with regards to CBJ ahead of last Friday’s game still rings true: the Blue Jackets are on fire, now with a stretch of 10-1 in their last 11 games after beating the St. Louis Blues on the road last Saturday and concluding a road trip with a 3-0 win ov...

Landon Slaggert Continues to Provide Quality Depth, Intriguing Offensive Upside

I’m doing a little digging as we get ready for three weeks without NHL games to discuss, and something got my attention that I thought I would share before the Blackhawks play their last game before the Olympic break. Landon Slaggert is actually generating a surprising amount of offensive chances for the Blackhawks this season. According to Natural Stat Trick , here are your top five Blackhawks in individual scoring chances for per 60 minutes of ice time (at 5-on-5) since the start of Jan...

“Checking Line” Offense, Bedard vs Celebrini, Trade Buzz, Trotz Retires, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks were loud in the room after their big 6-3 win last night. Ryan Donato had a career year and got a nice extension, but he’s struggled to find the back of the net consistently as his role has changed. He had a four-point night. Ilya Mikheyev continues to be a standout defensively for the Blackhawks and his name is floating in trade rumors. He, too, had a four-point night. Their line, with Jason Dickinson , combined to put up 10 points last night — while spending a good amount...

I’m a Believer: Blackhawks 6, Sharks 3

The Chicago Blackhawks snapped a five-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the San Jose Sharks at the United Center on Monday. The Blackhawks struck first on the power play seven minutes into the opening period. From the slot, Teuvo Teravainen found Connor Bedard, who ripped a sharp-angle one-timer from the bottom of the left faceoff circle to put the Blackhawks up 1-0. make that 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞-𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 with a goal for Bedsy 🚨 pic.twitter.com/SUnfMjldl0 — Chicago Blackhawks (@NH...

Blackhawks 6, Sharks 3 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

Remember when the Blackhawks couldn’t score on the power play? And went 0-for-26 over what felt like a calendar year between scores while skating with the advantage? The one stat that stood out most in the first period was… one — the number of goals the Blackhawks scored? No. The number of shots on net the Sharks had in 20 minutes. At 10:36 into the second period, Yaroslav Askarov skated to the bench in defeat. The Blackhawks had a stunning 4-0 lead on 10 shots on net, and the Sharks were...
